Most Kiwis Unsure How To Tell One Cryptocurrency From Another

With thousands of cryptocurrencies now in circulation, some New Zealand investors still struggle to tell one from another, according to Crossgate Capital, a New Zealand company that provides access to a professionally managed portfolio of digital assets.

“Some people buy crypto without really understanding what the project does,” says Scott Lester, Director at Crossgate Capital. “They invest in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other digital assets simply because they have heard of them, without considering their purpose or what problem they aim to solve.”

Lester says this lack of understanding can leave investors vulnerable to hype and short-term speculation. “Retail investors often follow trends or price movements instead of examining the fundamentals. Specialist investors know to focus on what gives each digital asset value; its function, adoption potential, and place within the wider ecosystem.”

Crossgate Capital’s view is that understanding crypto requires looking beyond the ticker symbol. Digital assets can fall into categories such as payment, smart-contract platforms, oracles, or decentralised finance projects. Each serves a distinct purpose, with different objectives.

“Just as shares can belong to sectors like healthcare, technology, or energy, crypto assets also occupy different categories,” says Lester. “The crypto market isn’t monolithic; it’s a complex ecosystem where different narratives drive value at different times. Our strategy is therefore to provide investors with exposure to both foundational crypto assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as a selection of altcoins that embrace the innovative potential of this sector.”

Lester believes that while crypto remains complex, awareness and education are improving. “Investors are beginning to recognise that digital assets are not all the same. The key is understanding what each project does and how it contributes to the broader digital economy.”

A greater understanding of what drives value in the digital asset space helps investors approach crypto with the same discipline they apply to traditional investments.

For New Zealand investors, Crossgate Capital offers investors the opportunity to gain immediate exposure to a diversified portfolio of assets. They go beyond Bitcoin and carefully select altcoins (the other cryptocurrencies). Particularly projects demonstrating innovative tech that solves genuine challenges.
